Warren "Red"Negri Sr.
(Football, 1929)

One of the early legends in the history of Danbury High School athletics is Warren "Red"Negri. Red Negri graduated from DHS in 1929 after playing varsity football, varsity baseball, and club boxing. He was a two way performer in football and was a third baseman on the baseball team. In that there were very few post season honors during that era some of the awards other Hall of Fame recipients received simply didn't exist in 1929 but certainly "Red"would have received his fair share had they existed. Upon graduation "Red"attended Virginia Tech where he again played three sports-boxing, football, and baseball. While at Virginia Tech he was an All Southern Conference 3rd baseman in baseball, a light heavyweight Southern Conference champion in boxing and an All Southern Conference selection and Honorable Mention All American in football. In 1989 he was named to the Virginia Tech All-Century team. He is a member of the Hokie Varisty Club and has been inducted into their Athletic Hall of Fame. After his years at Tech "Red"played professionally in both football and baseball. He played in the Yankee organization in baseball. In football he returned to Danbury and played for the Danbury Trojans. When the Trojans folded he played for the Boston Bears and the New York Americans in the American Football Conference where he was an All-Pro as well as being a teammate with the great Tom Harmon of Michigan. For his efforts throughout his career he was selected by the Danbury Old Timer's to receive the Old Timer's Award. With the exception of the years playing professional football "Red"spent his entire life as a Danbury resident. He owned "Red Negri's Bar and Grill"which was a Danbury institution for many years. He passed away in 1996 leaving a daughter, Anne Herringer, and a son Warren Negri, Jr. as well as five grandchildren.
