Mason Gasper
(Football, 1986)
This 1986 graduate was an impact player in both football and baseball, 2024
Danbury High School Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, Doctor Mason Gasper. He played
on the DHS football team in the 1983, 1984, and 1985 seasons. Mason was the football
team’s placekicker, wide receiver, and safety, and was captain his senior year. For the
1985 season, Mason set a DHS record for most receptions in a season. He received
All-FCIAC honors in both his junior and senior year.
During his junior and senior years, Mason played second base for the varsity
DHS baseball team and was captain his senior year. He received All-FCIAC honors his
senior year.
Coach Mike Cioppa said of him, “Mason, aside from being a good teammate
and very coachable was a record-holding receiver and excellent place kicker. He was
always prepared and totally engaged with the task at hand.”
After his graduation from Danbury High School, Mason continued his academic
and athletic career at the University of Rochester, earning a degree in Economics and
playing on the Rugby team. He then completed a Masters Degree in Public Health from
Columbia University. Then he went to medical school at the University of New England
where he graduated in 2000 with honors. Mason completed a neurology residency and
fellowship in neurophysiology at Brown University. After training, he worked in
academic and private practice in Rhode Island and teaches medical residents as
Assistant Professor of Clinical Neuroscience at Brown University Medical School.
Mason was “Medical Resident Teacher of the Year” in 2019.
Mason also started the Sports Concussion Management Program for Brown
Neurology Department in 2007 and directed the program until 2018. He was President
of the Rhode Island Neurology Society from 2012-2014. In his leisure time, he enjoys
tennis, skiing and biking. As a member of an adult track team, he has completed the
Boston Marathon and two half-triathlons.
Recently Mason has been an avid powerlifter and competed in local events.
