George J. Radachowsky Sr.
Football, 1955
This two-sport athlete scored twelve touchdowns for Danbury High’s 1954 undefeated football team, 2018 DHS Hall of Fame inductee, George J. Radachowsky, Sr. When George first entered Danbury High School, he had a News-Times paper route that he was forced to sell in order to participate in high school sports. He first tried out for the junior varsity football team, but when a varsity player was injured, George was brought up to varsity. The first play of his first game, George ran 86 yards for a touchdown! And so the legend began.
As a sophomore, junior and senior running back, George earned many nicknames. He was called “Mr. Touchdown DHS”, “Crazy Legs”, and the “Galloping Ghost”. In the final game of his brilliant high school career, the Hatters were playing Norwalk in their Thanksgiving Day game. The Hatters’ undefeated season was at stake. George ended his DHS football career with a record-setting, first offensive play of the game; a 99 yard touchdown run. Then George scored a 40 yard “gallop” for his second touchdown of the game. Danbury beat Norwalk 14-2. The win gave Danbury, under Coach Ed “Copper” Crotty, it’s only undefeated, untied season, 1954, in the school’s history.
George was also a three-year starter for the DHS basketball team. After his 1955 graduations from DHS, George attended Bridgton Academy in North Bridgton, Maine on a football scholarship.
