This 2014 Danbury High School Hall of Fame inductee was a co-MVP in the 1976 FCIAC Championship football game, Richard “Richie”Green. In 1976, Rich was the FCIAC scoring champ with twenty touchdowns. That season he rushed for 1184 yards and was named a scholar-athlete for the Fairfield County Connecticut Chapter of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame. He was also All-FCIAC West, a Bridgeport Post All-Star, Daily News All-Star, and News-Times All-Area. As a two year starter for Coach Gus Edwards, the DHS football had a record of 14-3-1. In his first game at running back, it earned him Bridgeport Post offensive player of the week, rushing for 278 yards, 319 total yards, and three touchdowns. Rich also had a distinguished career as a centerfielder for the Hatter’s baseball team. He was a two-year varsity starter. His senior season, he batted .400 and led the league in stolen bases, with 29 steals in 30 attempts. He was senior captain and was voted All-FCIAC and All-State, Class LL centerfielder in 1977. One of Rich’s favorite memories as a DHS athlete is his senior football season. The Hatters needed to win their last three games to make it to the FCIAC championship. On October 24, 1976, they were losing to Greenwich with 48 seconds left. Rich caught a screen pass and ran it 63 yards for a touchdown. The extra point was good. With the Hatters winning 14-13, Rich caught a Greenwich desperation pass on the final play of the game and ran it in for an 85 yard interception return. The final score of that game was 20-13. In the FCIAC Championship game, the Hatters beat Trumbull 10-6 who at that time was ranked #1 in the state. After his graduation from Danbury High School, Rich went to Boston College on a full football scholarship and was a wide receiver. He graduated from Boston College, cum laude with a computer science degree.
