Alicia O’Brien
(Softball, 1978)
As a two sport star in the
late 1970’s Alicia O’Brien established herself as one of the finest
overall female athletes to play at DHS in the pre-Title IX era. Her
primary sport was softball however she also excelled in basketball. She
was captain of both teams during her senior year. As a team the Hatter
softball teams were considered a state powerhouse and Alicia was right
in the center of the lineup. In 1976 they were 14th in the state and in
1977 they were 7th in the state. Alicia attended Uconn for two years and
played softball for the Huskies. She decided to transfer to WesConn and
continued her athletic career in softball and basketball. It was at
WestConn where she really found her niche. In 1983 Alicia was an All New
England softball player and ultimately was inducted into the
Connecticut Softball Hall of Fame in 2001. As impressive as her playing
career was she has had a much deeper impact as a college coach and
administrator. For 16 years from 1990 through 2006 Alicia was the Head
Softball Coach at WestConn as well as being an assistant basketball
coach. She also has served as Associate Athletic Director at WestConn
from 1994-2006 and was the Senior Woman’s Administrator.
