Mark Goodwin
(Cross Country, 1969)
One of the many cross
country and track stars produced at Danbury High School, 1969 graduate
Mark Goodwin’s accomplishments rank among the best in school history. In
Cross Country he was a two time FCIAC Champion in 1967 and 1968 and a
two-time All-State performer. His senior (1968) FCIAC season was
undefeated, and he was also an All-New England selection. Mark’s
accomplishments in Track have a similar ring to those in Cross Country;
two-time All-State performer and a 1969 All-New England selection in the
mile run. In the FCIAC he was both a one mile winner and a two mile
winner. He held the outdoor school record for the one mile and two mile
as well as the school indoor record in the two mile. After high school
Mark attended Central Connecticut State College (now University) and ran
for two and a half seasons for the Blue Devils before injuries ended
his college track career. Mark’s fingerprints on track and cross country
continued into his professional career. He has been a teacher, coach
and athletic director at Bethel High School for the last 35 years. His
coaching career at Bethel spanned 28 years and included awards as
Connecticut Coach of the Year in both Cross Country and Track and Field.
His cross country teams have won 13 WCC titles, two class titles, and
one state Open title. He has coached numerous All-State athletes. He
co-founded the O’Grady Relays at DHS, was a recipient of the Danbury Old
Timer’s Association Award in 2009, and he has been Athletic Director at
Bethel High School for the past eleven years.
