This 2019 Danbury High Hall of Fame inductee grew up playing a variety of sports but her ultimate love was playing softball and pitching fast-pitch, 1987 graduate Kerry Iovino. Kerry played all three years of high school softball being coached by Bill Foley and her contribution her junior year led the Danbury High School softball team to their first conference playoff appearance. In September of her junior year, she was in a serious car accident where she was struck by a car and thrown approximately twenty feet. She endured surgery to her knee, and multiple surgeries to her upper thigh. She worked tirelessly during her rehabilitation to be able to pitch and compete for the spring season.
By her senior season, Kerry continued her strength and conditioning routine and pitched with her knee brace to lead the Danbury High softball team to a 23-3 record. With the support of tremendous teammates, Danbury made it to the state tournament semi-finals by beating Windsor High School. A captain of the softball team, Kerry earned second team All-FCIAC her senior season.
After her graduation from Danbury High, Kerry attended the University of Rhode Island, graduating in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Development Counseling Family Studies and a minor in Psychology. Following graduation Kerry was employed by the State of Connecticut Department of Children and Families as a case worker in Hartford. Kerry believes in the importance of hard work and perseverance, “Any athlete will tell you that sports prepare you for life lessons, both uplifting, happy ones and devastatingly heartbreaking ones.” Kerry and her husband, Mike, have passed on the message of perseverance to their three children.
