(Football, 1949)
This 1949 Danbury High
graduate played basketball and baseball but he is remembered for his
blocking ability in football, 2012 Hall of Fame inductee, Harold Starr.
Danbury High football coach, Ed Crotty was once quoted as saying,
“Starr, you have the best blocking form I have ever seen, at any level
of football”. Harold had the most receptions in the 1947 season and was
the captain in 1948. After his graduation from Danbury High, Harold
continued to play football for the Golden Hill Team and later, the Top
Hat Bulldogs. He also continued playing basketball in the Lion’s Club
League for the Swish Kids. He also continued playing baseball in the
City League. Harold also played golf on several teams and had a prolific
bowling career. He received a Danbury Bowlarama Honor Award and had the
high average in 1963, bowling with the Advent Christian Church team. He
also bowled with the Leahy’s team in the Commercial Men’s League. With
his partner, Joe Saleem, they won the Men’s Doubles Tournament at the
Brewster Lanes in 1962. Harold has had a long career with the post
office and is married to Joanne Conklin. He was honored by the Danbury
Old-Timers Association in 1997. The Starrs are long-time supporters of
local high school sports and can be seen rooting on Danbury High sports
teams.
