Nelson Lopes

Nelson Lopes career as a soccer
player from high school, through college and as a pro ranks him as the
finest, or at least one of the finest, soccer player to ever kick a ball
for the Hatters. The 1991 graduate was a three time All-FCIAC player,
and three time News-Times All Area player a three time All-State player
and a two time All New England player. In 1990 Nelson achieved All
America status as well as being named the Gatorade State Player of the
Year for Connecticut. He finished his career with 94 goals and 67
assists. He could have been a 100 goal scorer for his career had he not
selflessly went from forward to midfielder in his senior year. The
change was partly responsible for Danbury winning the first state soccer
championship and a number six national ranking under coach Gary
Donaldson. His best scoring season was in 1989 when he netted 35 goals
for the Hatters. In post season play Nelson had an impressive 16 goals
in 20 post season games. The Hatters record in his four years was
64-10-2. For his efforts DHS retired his number 14 jersey. After high
school Nelson attended the University of Connecticut and was a four year
player. In 1994 he was captain of the Husky team. His collegiate honors
include 2 years as an All Big East selection and All New England status
in 1994. Following college Nelson continued his playing career as a
professional playing for both the New England Fever and the Connecticut
Wolves.
