Everett Walens
(Football, 1958)
From 1955 through 2005 Ev
Walens could be found, with the exception of his four years at
Springfield College, somewhere in the Danbury High School Yearbook. Ev
graduated from DHS in 1958 and started teaching and coaching at the
White Street campus in 1962. From that point on “Mr. Walens” has been an
integral part of the fabric of Danbury High School. Even today Ev and
his wife Sue can be seen at basketball games in the winter and football
games in the fall cheering the Hatters on. It would be a mistake however
to view Ev as simply a teacher, administrator and fan because Ev Walens
was an outstanding high school and college athlete in his own right. Ev
played football and was a two year starter for “Copper” Crotty which
included a number three ranking in the state in 1957. It was as a track
athlete that Ev Walens became a standout performer for track coach Dan
O’Grady. Ev was a state champion in the discuss in 1957 and 1958, was a
captain of the Track & Field team in 1958 and won the Rotary Club
Track Award in 1958. He still is in the top ten at DHS in both the
discuss and the shot put. Upon graduation Ev attended Springfield
College and continued as a two sport star. He was a three year letterman
as a tackle and a four year letterman on the track team. He finished
4th in New England small colleges in the javelin and 5th in New England
small colleges in the discuss. Ev finished his college years by
graduating from Springfield Magna Cum Laude in 1962. Ev started his
professional career at DHS as an English teacher and football coach in
1962. By 1972 he moved to administration and has served in that capacity
ever since.
