John "Vos" Vosilus
(Football, 1970)

Danbury High School has had it's share of great football players such as Dick Gilliam, Daryl Dewan, Walt Belardinelli and Maurice Rosado just to name a few. Most of the all time "greats" are running backs, quarterbacks or players in the "skilled" positions. The list of all time great linemen is a much shorter list. Near the top of that list is 1970 graduate John Vosilus. John was a three time News-Times All Area selection, a two time all FCIAC selection and the first DHS lineman to be named All State by the New Haven Register which he accomplished in the 1969 season. Additionally he was Tri-Captain of the 1969 Hatter squad. He was a solid blocker on offense but it was on the defensive side of the ball where he stood out most. He had a spectacular year on defense as a junior but his reputation preceded him the following year as most teams ran away from his side of the line as a senior. He started on both offense and defense in 31 consecutive games. When the 1969 football season came to an end John decided to give wrestling a whirl and what a whirl he gave it! Although completely inexperienced in the sport he posted a 17-1 record and won the unlimited division in the state wrestling tournament to became the first of many state wrestling champions for the Hatters. After graduation John entered the United States Military Academy at West Point and graduated from there in 1975. While at West Point he continued his athletic career by participating in junior varsity football and wrestling. In addition to his degree from West Point John also went on the get a degree in elementary education from St. Mary University in Kansas and an M.A. in education from Kansas State University. Upon graduation John spent 22 years in the U.S. Army and is currently involved in the Army Command Training Program.
