1989 DHS graduate Beth Jowdy Sheehan left her mark on the soccer field and basketball court. While her soccer contributions were significant it was her play on the Lady Hatters’ Basketball Team where her presence was most keenly felt. A three year starter and captain in her senior season, Beth led the Girls’ Soccer Team in scoring for three years and was selected to play in the Connecticut Junior Soccer Association Senior Bowl. Beth served as the starting point guard on the basketball team for three seasons, earning News-Times’ All Area 2nd team status as a junior and News –Times’ All Area 1st team as a senior. Her greatest contributions on the hardwood were her ball hawking ability and her ability to distribute the ball to her teammates. These team related skills helped the Lady Hatters to CIAC Class LL Runner Up finishes in 1987 and 1989. As a senior Beth averaged nine assists per game and three and a half steals per game. Basketball awards and accolades include an All Star Team selection for the Jewish Community Center, Connecticut High School Coaches Association All Star Team selection, and Coach George DeMaio’s Athlete of the Week. After DHS Beth attended Mount Saint Mary’s in Maryland and played basketball for four years there, winning a league championship each of those four years. She received her degree in Rhetoric and Writing from “the Mount” and began pursuing her love of athletics as a post graduate. In 1996 she received a Master’s Degree in Sports Management from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst and a PHD from the same in 2006. Presently Dr. Jowdy is an Associate Professor in Sports Management and Director of College Unbound at the University of Southern New Hampshire.
