Ed Mantie

This 2012 Hall of Fame inductee
led his 1990 football team to an undefeated regular season and FCIAC
championship: Ed Mantie. Ed was the quarterback, place-kicker, and
safety for the Hatter’s football squad for both the 1990 championship
season and his junior year as well. Ed was also a member of both the
indoor and outdoor track teams. In addition to his athletic
accomplishments, Ed was a member of the National Honor Society and
ranked in the top ten percent of his graduating class. While at Danbury
High School, Ed received many awards. In his junior year he was
News-Times All-Area, All-State punter, All-FCIAC West quarterback, All
Bridgeport Post quarterback. His senior FCIAC Championship year, the
Hatters were also Class LL state finalists. Ed was again All-State
punter, All-FCIAC quarterback, News-Times All-Area quarterback and the
Kiwanis Gold Watch Award winner as outstanding football scholar. He also
was recipient of the Thom McCann National Scholar Athlete of the Year.
After his graduation from Danbury High School, Ed was awarded a full
athletic scholarship to Boston University to play football. While at
Boston University, Ed also received many accolades. He was a four year
letterman, and in 1995 his senior season, he was presented with the
Harry Agganis Award as the team MVP. One of the team co-captains, Ed,
who was originally recruited as a quarterback, set a Terriers’
single-season record with 81 receptions. Ed was named Third Team
Associated Press All-American, First Team All-Yankee Conference and
second Team All- ECAC Division IAA. Upon graduating from Boston
University, Ed worked as the strength and conditioning coach for the
University of Massachusetts Lowell Division I hockey team for ten years.
In 2006, he got a high school teaching and coaching position. Ed is
currently a physical education teacher at Weston High in Massachusetts
and offensive coordinator for the football team at Westwood High School.
