This 1949 Danbury High graduate played basketball and baseball but he is remembered for his blocking ability in football, 2012 Hall of Fame inductee, Harold Starr. Danbury High football coach, Ed Crotty was once quoted as saying, “Starr, you have the best blocking form I have ever seen, at any level of football”. Harold had the most receptions in the 1947 season and was the captain in 1948. After his graduation from Danbury High, Harold continued to play football for the Golden Hill Team and later, the Top Hat Bulldogs. He also continued playing basketball in the Lion’s Club League for the Swish Kids. He also continued playing baseball in the City League. Harold also played golf on several teams and had a prolific bowling career. He received a Danbury Bowlarama Honor Award and had the high average in 1963, bowling with the Advent Christian Church team. He also bowled with the Leahy’s team in the Commercial Men’s League. With his partner, Joe Saleem, they won the Men’s Doubles Tournament at the Brewster Lanes in 1962. Harold has had a long career with the post office and is married to Joanne Conklin. He was honored by the Danbury Old-Timers Association in 1997. The Starrs are long-time supporters of local high school sports and can be seen rooting on Danbury High sports teams.
