Michael Timan
(Baseball, 1947)

This Danbury High graduate of the class of 1947 earned twelve varsity letters in baseball, football, basketball and golf. Even before he entered DHS, Mickey won back-to-back championships at Main Street School in basketball and baseball and won the 10-12 year old caddy tournament at the Ridgewood Country Club. While at Danbury High School, Mickey played baseball for Coach Wally Parkhurst for four years and served as team captain and earned four varsity letters. Mickey earned three varsity letters in football, playing for Coach Gideon Roy for two years, and one year under new Coach Ed Crotty. During his senior year, Mickey started every game at right guard and "drop kicked" a PAT, the last player to do so at Danbury High School. A big highlight of his senior football season was the upset victory over Norwalk High School on Thanksgiving Day. Mickey played basketball for four years at DHS and earned three varsity letters, playing for both Coach Gid Roy and Coach Ed Crotty. During his junior year in high school, Mickey formed a committee of former Ridgewood caddies (John Dzuback, Aldo Butera, Carmen Butera, Sam Jacobellis, Ralph LoStocco, Paul Fako) to have golf reinstated as a varsity sport at DHS. The committee was successful in their quest, and Mickey earned two varsity letters in golf. Under golf coach Walter Peterson, the team made it to the state tournament. While at Danbury High School, Mickey served as class president both his junior and senior years. After his graduation, Mickey continued being involved in athletics, playing both minor league and city baseball, and softball. He also coached little league baseball and umpired. Mickey was a career firefighter with the city of Danbury, appointed in 1957 and achieved the rank of lieutenant. He has been involved in numerous community service activities including the War Memorial, St. Nicholas Church, Ability Beyond Disability and the Danbury Irish Cultural Center. His marriage to Rita Skelly resulted in nine children. In 1981, Mickey was honored for his athletic achievements and community service and inducted into the Danbury Old Timers Association.
