This is a story of a fairytale football season. The 1976 Danbury High Football team consisted of 30 players. The team was not expected to do much that season. Lead by Tri Captains Bruce Michalek, Greg Holmes (DHS HOF) and Ken Baxter, Head Coach Gus Edwards and Assistant Coach Joe Coniglio. Quarterback Bruce Michalek in the ‘75 season lead the Hatters to a 7-2 record with a career record of 15-3-1 overall. The Hatters had a one two punch, lead by Richie Green and Bruce Michalek running the ball and a good stable of receivers in Tom Evans and Ralph Baldelli. Offensive linemen Hans Otto, Brian Repole, Ken Schmieldel and Glenn Holmes (DHS HOF). Defense was lead by Greg Holmes, Ken Baxter, Ivan Pagan, Chris Dunkin and Brett Jones. The team consisting of several players returning as starters. The first Monday after their ‘75 season they went to work in the weight room under the guidance of assistant coach Joe Coniglio and head coach Gus Edwards. The team started their journey on that day and ended it with an FCIAC Championship against top rated Trumbull High School 10-6.
