John Macchiaverna
(1940)

Nicknamed “Johnny Mac”, he played three major sports while at Danbury High School. He played football for Coach Gideon Roy, and was the quarterback and captain his junior and senior years. Although not a big man, John was a mainstay on the basketball team and also for the baseball nine. John earned twelve varsity letters in three sports while at DHS. He also boxed in high school tournaments and for the Connecticut Golden Gloves. His scholarship to Providence College was put aside when he enlisted for the service and had a distinguished combat career with the Army Air Corps. After his return from his military service in World War II, John continued to play baseball, softball and basketball in local industrial and city leagues. He also served as a quarterback for the fabled Barbary Coast.
